The following are the Divisions for our 2023 Spring Recreational season:
BASEBALL/T-BALL DIVISIONS (co-ed; scroll down for girls-only Softball)
NON-COMPETITIVE DIVISIONS (co-ed Pre-K to 2nd/3rd) – In all our non-competitive divisions below, there are no tryouts. Players will be assigned to teams by the Division Commissioner, and may request to be assigned with a couple of friends. No scores or standings are recorded.
T-Ball Minors – Grades: primarily Pre-K / some K - non-competitive - co-ed
The T-Ball Minors division teaches the dynamics and fundamentals of baseball, using a wide plastic bat and plastic balls, while having fun with friends in a non-competitive environment.
T-Ball – Grades: primarily K / some 1st - non-competitive/instructional - co-ed
The T-Ball division teaches the fundamentals of the game of baseball, using a metal bat and soft baseballs (baseball glove required), to prepare kids for the next age divisions, in a non-competitive, instructional environment. Players begin hitting off a tee and gradually shift to coach pitching.
Baseball Gold – Grades: 1st - 2nd - instructional / limited competition
The Baseball Gold division introduces all elements of baseball (baseball glove required) to prepare players for transition to full competitive play. The season begins with short clinics followed by games, coaches pitch, and limited competitive play, such as 3-out innings, swinging strike outs and keeping score, is introduced gradually during the season.
BASEBALL YOUTH COMPETITIVE (DRAFT) DIVISIONS (co-ed 2nd-7th): In all Baseball Youth (Draft) competitive divisions, games and practices are held on weekday late afternoons and at varying times on weekends, players pitch, balls and strikes are called, scores and standings are recorded, and all teams make the playoffs. Teams within each Division play one another in a “house” league throughout the season. To register for the Green, Blue, Majors and MajorsPlus competitive divisions below, the player should register for "BB Draft", must participate in mandatory tryouts (conducted for purposes of division placement and team competitive balance - see our Tryouts page), and will be drafted into the appropriate division by a coaches draft. Players may not select a specific competitive division (other than coaches' children) nor request placement with other players. ALL players who timely register will play on a team. (Girls are welcome in Baseball but typically only a handful of girls choose it across the grades - most play in Softball. Girls electing to play Baseball will likely be the only girl on the team.)
Baseball Green – Grades: 2nd-3rd/4th - introductory competitive division
The Baseball Green division introduces all players to full competitive play, including player pitching. There is no stealing and certain other rules are modified to simplify this introductory competitive experience.
Baseball Blue – Grades: 3rd-5th - intermediate competitive division
The Baseball Blue division expands competitive play, introducing limited base stealing.
Baseball Majors – Grades: 4th-6th - full competitive division
The Baseball Majors division offers full competitive play, with unlimited base stealing.
Baseball MajorsPlus – Grades: 5th/6th-7th - full competitive division, 50/70 field
The Baseball MajorsPlus division shifts to a slightly bigger field and introduces full “live ball” rules, including leading before the pitch
BASEBALL SENIORS COMPETITIVE DIVISION (co-ed 8th-10th): In the Baseball Seniors competitive division, games and practices are held primarily on weekends (typically both days), with a few weekday evening games possible late in the season, games are played on full-size 60/90 baseball fields, and full "live ball" rules apply. Players may not request placement with other players. The Baseball Seniors division is a recreational division for players of all abilities. Teams play one another in a “house” league throughout the season.
NON-COMPETITIVE DIVISIONS
T-Ball Minors (Pre-K/K) - See above under Baseball/T-Ball Divisions - full co-ed division.
T-Ball (K/1st) - See above under Baseball/T-Ball Divisions - full co-ed division.
Softball Gold – Grades: 1st - 3rd - instructional / limited competition
The Softball Gold division introduces all elements of softball (softball glove required) to prepare players for transition to competitive play. Players and coaches will participate in a combination of clinics teaching core skills, and structured scrimmages and games. Coaches will pitch, supervise and umpire those games and scores and standings will not be recorded.
SOFTBALL YOUTH COMPETITIVE (DRAFT) DIVISIONS (3rd-7th): In all Softball Youth (Draft) competitive divisions, games and practices are held on weekday late afternoons and at varying times on weekends, players pitch, balls and strikes are called, scores and standings are recorded, and all teams make the playoffs. Teams within each Division play one another in a “house” league throughout the season. To register for the Blue and Majors competitive divisions below, the player should register for "Softball Draft", attend a mandatory skills evaluation (conducted for purposes of division placement and team competitive balance - see our Tryouts page), and will be drafted into the appropriate division by a coaches draft. Players may not select a specific competitive division (other than coaches' children) nor request placement with other players. ALL players who timely register will play on a team.
NOTE: LMLL has not been able to field a Softball Green division since 2019. Instead, all 2nd grade players and all beginner/less experienced players in 3rd grade should register for the Softball Gold division, described above. 3rd graders who have previously completed at least one season of Softball/Baseball Gold or have similar experience MAY register for Softball Draft and be considered for a Softball Blue team. Any 3rd graders not selected for Softball Blue will automatically be placed on a Softball Gold team. If sufficient players register in 2nd-5th grades this year, the Softball Green division may be reinstated for 2nd-3rd/4th graders - if so, players will be notified and eligible 2nd and 3rd graders registered for Gold will be offered the opportunity to switch.
Softball Blue – Grades: 3rd-5th - introductory competitive division
The Softball Blue division introduces all players to competitive play, including player pitching. Limited base stealing is introduced during the year and certain other rules are modified to simplify this introductory competitive experience. More advanced play is introduced during the season.
Softball Majors – Grades: 5th-7th - full competitive division
The Softball Majors division offers full competitive play, with full base stealing
Softball Seniors – Ages 13-16 (as of December 31, 2022) - A team of our oldest players competes in weekly games (generally doubleheaders on weekends) against neighboring towns. There are few, if any, practices for this recreation team playing in a travel format. See our Season Calendar (Spring Rec) page for the dates for Opening Day for this year (SB Seniors season may start a little later).
