Help Reduce Single-Use Plastics & Litter at the Fields!

THREE KEY STEPS TO TAKE

The Village of Larchmont has launched an initiative to reduce single use plastic water bottles and other litter, especially plastic, at Flint Park.  They have asked LMLL to support this initiative, and we believe it makes sense to extend to ALL fields that LMLL uses.

The goal of this initiative is to reduce single-use plastics and litter at our fields. We are asking all our coaches, players and families to do this by establishing sustainable team practices. Together, we can keep our fields and parks clean and promote an environmentally friendly sports culture.

Here are key actions for everyone to take:

  • Single-use items (water bottles, snack bags, etc) are discouraged at practice and games. Each player should bring their own reusable water bottle which can be refilled at water stations if needed. Parents should be mindful of this goal when bringing team snacks.
  • If any trash or recycling is left at a field/park, it must be inside the appropriate bin, not left at the base of the bins or in the surrounding area.  If there isn't room, throw it out/recycle somewhere else on your way home, or bring it home and throw it out/recycle there.  In fact, that's a good practice even if there is room in the bins at the field/park - to keep them from overflowing.  "Take out what you bring in!"
  • Every participant, including players, coaches, and spectators, is responsible for leaving dugouts, benches, fields and parks litter-free. This includes personal items, trash, and any equipment used in the park. "Leave it nicer than you found it!"

HOW IT HELPS

Reusable water bottles offer numerous benefits, both for individuals and the environment:

Environmental Impact:

  • Reduced Plastic Waste: By using reusable water bottles, individuals contribute to a significant reduction in the consumption of single-use plastic bottles. This helps decrease the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills and oceans, contributing to a cleaner environment.

Cost-Effective:

  • Savings Over Time: While the initial cost of a reusable water bottle may be higher than a single-use plastic bottle, the long-term savings are substantial. Continuous purchases of disposable bottles can add up quickly, making a reusable bottle a cost-effective choice in the long run.

Health and Safety:

  • Material Safety: Reusable water bottles are typically made from materials like stainless steel, glass, or BPA-free plastics. This reduces the risk of harmful chemicals leaching into the water, promoting better health and safety. Almost 93% of plastic water bottles contain microparticles that detrimentally affect your health.

Temperature Control:

  • Insulation Options: Many reusable bottles offer insulation features, keeping beverages either hot or cold for extended periods. This is particularly beneficial for those who prefer their drinks at a specific temperature, whether it's hot coffee in the winter or cold water during exercise.

Easy Maintenance:

  • Dishwasher-Friendly: Many reusable water bottles are dishwasher-safe, making them easy to clean and maintain. This convenience encourages regular cleaning, ensuring that the bottle remains hygienic for repeated use.
  • Quick and convenient water refill stations are placed throughout some of the parks our fields are located in.
